What is a broadband phone service?

In Plain English:

Broadband phone, voice over ip (VOIP,) IP telephony are all jargon for, plug a telephone into your computer and talk to people. The internet comes down a telephone line anyway so with a few electronic gadgets this is made possible.

What you need for a VOIP service is:

•  A computer
•  An Internet Connection (Broadband)
•  A special VOIP Phone
•  A special VOIP Adapter
•  A mouth to use the phone

That's it! Of course if you really want to be confused you can take a surf, and as in anything technical you will become totally confused.

If you're a person at home looking for cheap calls to untie Flo in Australia , or you want to yabber for hours with Dorris down the street this is for you.

So what next: Lets take a look at How it works (Pictures only i promise, from there we can work out what you need)!

In Techie:

Broadband phone service, also known as VoIP. is an acronym (V.O.I.P) which stands for "Voice over IP". VoIP is the method of making and receiving telephone type voice transmissions over any IP network such as the Internet, an office LAN or a private network between corporate offices.

VoIP is also known as IP Telephony. With IP telephony, voice conversations are turned into digitized data and packetized for transmission across a network. This type of phone transmission is regularly referred to as VoIP or Voice over Broadband because of the nature of the actual IP transmission.

    What is DSL access?

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) Internet connectivity, unlike cable modem-based service, provides the user with dedicated bandwidth. However, the maximum bandwidth available to DSL users is usually lower than the maximum cable modem rate because of differences in their respective network technologies. Also, the "dedicated bandwidth" is only dedicated between your home and the DSL provider's central office -- the providers offer little or no guarantee of bandwidth all the way across the Internet.
